Position Title: Wilma Hefty Clancy Endowed Graduate Assistantship for Rural School Collection

Reports to:  Nathan Arndt (UNI Museum Assistant Director & Chief Curator) – 319-273-6922

Terms of Employment:

  • For the fall semester: 10 hours per week, beginning August 26, 2019 and ending December 20, 2019.  Does not include the week of Thanksgiving Break.

  • For the spring semester: 10 hours per week, beginning January 13, 2020 and ending May 8, 2020.  Does not include the week of Spring Break.

  • Hours will be between 9-5 (Monday-Friday)


  • Half assistantship salary for 2019-2020 is $2,642 per semester.  Full-time assistantship salary for 2019-20 is $5,284 per semester.

  • Salary is prorated on a weekly basis for late start.  

  • Graduate Assistants may qualify for in-state tuition and fees.  

  • Graduate Assistants receive University holidays and do not work during Thanksgiving Break, Spring Break, or the interims between semesters.

Position Description:

The Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture (CHRIEC) seeks a graduate student to assist in stewarding, maintaining, and providing access to the Rural School Collections.  Responsibilities may include rehousing materials into archival folders and boxes; creating index labels for microfilm holdings; corresponding with donors; fulfilling research and reference requests; and creating and/or updating finding aids via ArchivesSpace (an online archival information system).  Other possible responsibilities include museum website maintenance, digital content management, collection management, and researcher training.

Student will be responsible for self-guided software training on ArchivesSpace, ViewScan, Drupal, and Adobe Photoshop; for gaining a working understanding of professional archival practices and local policies; and for learning and maintaining the overall organizational structure of the rural school collections. Students will also work to digitize and upload oral interviews onto the museum webpage.

Student will work closely with the UNI Museum staff in the transition of the rural school collection to the new research facility on the first floor of the Rod Library. The student will work with the UNIM Outreach Coordinator to design a rural school trunk for educational programming.



  • Be unconditionally admitted to degree status in a graduate degree program (provisional admission will be considered only for non-GPA reasons)

  • Enrolled for at least 9 graduate credit hours the semester of the assistantship 

  • Have a final official transcript on file in the Office of Admissions showing bachelor’s degree has been conferred. 

  • Maintain a UNI cumulative graduate GPA of at least 3.00.  A newly admitted graduate student must have at least a 3.0 GPA for undergraduate or previous graduate work of at least 8 graded credit hours.

  • Must be able to interact with the general public and answer research questions

  • Must be able to carefully handle and move up to 50 pounds

  • Self-directed


  • B.A. degree in History, Public History, and Education

  • Experience working within a museum or archives

  • Experience working with museum databases

  • Organized

  • Proactive about asking questions and implementing feedback

  • Ability to repeatedly lift over 50 pounds

  • Excellent communication and research skills.
