COVID-19 Update: While the library building is closed until further notice, WE ARE STILL OPEN ONLINE. We continue to make as many of our services available as possible. See more at "Remote Resources for Library Users" or contact us.

From the Interim Dean

Welcome to Rod Library at The University of Northern Iowa! The Library provides access to rich information resources and innovative services for students, faculty, and staff at UNI as well as members of the larger community.  It is our mission to empower and inspire our patrons.  Our collections and services are shaped by our established values, which include collaboration, diversity, flexibility, information literacy, intellectual freedom, and student success,

Library resources include books, periodicals, and government documents in print and electronic formats, databases and digitized full-text collections, maps, sound recordings, and DVDs. You can identify what we make available in all formats through OneSearch!, our discovery service.   If we cannot provide the resources you want and need, our staff will help you locate them elsewhere and, in many instances, obtain them for you through our excellent interlibrary loan service. Or, you can borrow directly from the TRAC consortium, other regional libraries on the Ex Libris system, using the “Local Libraries“ link in OneSearch!.  Our Special Collections and University Archives documents institutional history and the work of diverse individuals and organizations, most of which have some connection to the University.  Photographic essays, local and regional publications, student work, and other resources are accessible in digitized format through UNI ScholarWorks, our growing institutional repository.

We pride ourselves on providing personalized services whenever possible.  By all means, “Ask Us” when you have a question about resources, services, or policies. Request a Research Consultation and check out the extensive collection of Subject Guides available on our web site to help you focus your research.  If you have a title to recommend for addition to the Library’s collections, submit your suggestion through the Recommend a Purchase link on our web site.

Our Learning Commons offers collaborative study space and access to current technologies.  Through partnerships with student support services we can provide assistance at every step of the research process, from creation to presentation. The Digital Media Hub, managed by IT, supports digital media creation (video, audio, graphics), providing equipment such as cameras and green screen technology, and assistance in their use.  Meeting rooms and group studies can be booked using RodScheduler.  On its upper floors, the Library offers quiet study spaces.

We encourage you to take advantage of our collaborative research stations, quiet study areas, group studies, and Multipurpose Room, which you can book to rehearse a presentation. Check out the artwork displayed throughout the building, which includes student creations, and the latest exhibits in the UNI Museum.   Bring your laptop and enjoy our wireless environment, or check out one of ours.  Work on a class project, or take a break, and use the craft supplies in the Makerspace.  While you are here, grab coffee, a snack, or lunch at the Book Bistro.  Find a book for pleasure reading or a DVD to watch.  If you are working from a dorm room or office, or are off campus, you can call us for assistance, send us an e-mail or a text message, or use our Chat function at specified hours.  Check out our mobile web site as well.

We are eager to support your study, research, and instructional needs both in the Library and online, and to contribute to your success.  We are committed to diversity in our resources and services, and to treating everyone equitably and respectfully.  Tell us what you think and share suggestions of ways we might make your Library experience better.  You can use our online form or email me directly.

We are here for you, so let us be of service!
