Scope and Content

This small collection of books was sent to the University of Northern Iowa Archives in about 2005 by descendants of James Cleland Gilchrist, first Principal of the Iowa State Normal School. Principal Gilchrist made his personal library available to early Normal School students. Some of the books in this collection quite likely were part of the collection that he shared.  Some of the books were inscribed by Principal Gilchrist, his daughter Maude Gilchrist, and his son Fred C. Gilchrist
