Research Interests

Dr. Johnson has published six books and numerous shorter pieces on topics in twentieth century American legal/constitutional history. He has also edited a two-volume encyclopedia on leading American court cases. His most recent book, a study of affirmative action in America, was published in 2009. He is a recipient of the Iowa Regents Award for Faculty Excellence. A former UNI History Department Head, John is a serious golfer, cross-country skier and long-time fan of UNI women’s volleyball.

Teaching Interests

Professor Johnson taught a variety of courses on U.S. History and interdisciplinary topics in the social sciences during his more than 40-year academic career. In recent years he offered U.S. History Since 1960, U.S. Constitutional History, and a Liberal Arts Core course on critical thinking titled “Analysis of Contemporary Social Issues.”

Dr. Johnson retired from UNI in June 2016, at which time he donated his papers to the Special Collections and Archives unit of the Rod Library.
