Historical Note

The College of Business and Behavioral Sciences was established in 1968 when the university organized into four colleges. It included four departments: the Business and Business Education Department, the Home Economics Department, the Psychology Department, and the Social Science Department. In 1969, the Social Science Department was broken up into five distinct departments: Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, and Sociology and Anthropology.

The college existed under this name from 1968-1981 before it was changed to the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (CSBS) when the College of Business Administration was established.

As of 2019, the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences includes 19 majors, 14 minors, and certificate programs "focused on understanding human nature, improving society and enriching people's lives."

Arrangement

  • Series 1: Administrative Records
  • Series 2: Subject Files

Scope and Content

The first series in the collection, Administrative Records, includes minutes, notes, and other documents from CSBS faculty and the CSBS Faculty Senate. Topics include by-laws and other senate rules; faculty policies and procedures; the School of Business' request for college status; college curriculum matters; events; and more. Most of the material is typewritten, though a handful of items are handwritten. Also in Series 1 are university-wide documents as collected by the Office of the Dean. Included are the Registrar's annual report, institutional research booklets, and miscellaneous documents from offices on campus (man of which focus on campus computing). The series dates from 1968-2011.

The second series, Subject Files, 1971-2011, offers insight into the work of the office of the Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, particularly from 1985-2000, and is arranged alphabetically. The series includes materials from the offices of Deans Robert Morin, John Deegan, Aaron Podolfesky, and Jill Wallace. It provides a well-rounded view of the College's administrative functioning, including documentation of the dean's responsibilities to the Vice President and Provost, as well as their role in working with the College's various departments.

Additionally, the series offers a good summary view of departmental work, with materials such as annual reports, planning documents, proposals, meeting minutes and agendas, and correspondence files. Much of these kinds of materials can be found in departmental folders. They also contain many handwritten annotations.

A particularly strong feature of the subject files are those related to the development of the Master of Social Work and the Master of Public Policy programs, along with documentation of the Women's Studies program. Also included is information about the separation of business-related curricula from the College of Business and Behavioral Sciences into the new College of Business Administration.
