Music has been a subject at the University of Northern Iowa since its founding in 1876. Now part of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, music was initially offered alongside art in the Art Department. This arrangement lasted until 1892, when the two subject areas split, and music became the Vocal and Instrumental Music Department. This name lasted until 1896, when the department name switched to the broader Music Department.
The Music Department experienced fairly frequent name changes in the early 20th century. In 1909, it split into four distinct divisions: the Public School Music Department, Orchestral and Band Music Department, Pianoforte Music Department, and the Voice Department. By 1911, however, there were just two music departments, the Music Department and the Violin, and Orchestral and Band Music Department. Over the next few years, department name changes included the Orchestral Music Department, and shifts between the Music Department to the Public School Music Department, and back again. By 1934, the two different music departments at the time, the Orchestral Music Department and the Music/Public School Music faculty merged to form the single Music Department. The final name change came in 1978, when the department was renamed the School of Music.
The collection is arranged chronologically by academic year.
