Historical Note

Thomas W. Hansmeier was born on July 9, 1932. After graduating from Waukon (Iowa) High School, he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Northern Iowa in 1954 and 1957, respectively, and his Ed.D. from Michigan State University.

He then worked at Michigan State University, Kent State University, Southern Illinois University, and the University of North Dakota before beginning employment at UNI. Hansmeier was the Vice President for Educational and Student Services from 1971-1984 until he resigned the position. He continued as a faculty member in the College of Education. In total, Hansmeier served as an administrator and professor for over twenty years before his retirement. In 1979, he received a UNI Alumni Service Award.

Hansmeier passed away in October 2006.

Scope and Content

The collection is arranged into two series. The first, Administrative Records, is comprised of two subseries. Subseries 1, Annual Reports, 1971-1976, contains reports for various offices and divisions on campus. Please the inventory for the complete list. Subseries 2, Admissions Standards, 1980-1985, focuses on revising the university’s admissions standards and consists of correspondence, reports, articles, high school evaluation sheets, and more. The original order was maintained for this subseries.

Series 2, Subject Files, is comprised of two subjects. The first, Student Unrest, is the bulk of the series and dates from 1969-1971. Included are student disciplinary materials; outgoing and incoming correspondence from the Board of Regents, citizens expressing their concerns about the unrest; and from faculty. Also included are university statements and policies, items from other Regents institutions, documents related to the Ad Hoc Committee on Campus Disorders; clippings about campus unrest; and opinions from organizations such as the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom and the Iowa Civil Liberties Union.

The second subject, UNI-Dome, contains correspondence concerning the plans and desire for a dome structure; a 1972 report President Kamerick regarding the feasibility of such a project; and information sheet and facilities study about the dome; Alumnus excerpts about the project; and documents concerning opposition to building a dome.
