Wayne Irving Anderson received his A.A. degree from Keokuk Community College in 1955 and his B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Iowa. He earned his Ph.D. in 1963, also from the University of Iowa and gained experience at the National Science Foundation Geology Laboratory. Anderson also served as a Laboratory Instructor in Earth Science, Mineralogy, Field Methods, and Structural Geology at the University of Iowa from 1960-1963.
He joined the University of Northern Iowa faculty in 1963 and served as the first head of the Department of Earth Science from 1970-1995. Anderson was also instrumental in developing UNI's geology curriculum and twice received the Dean's Award for Superior Achievement in the College of Natural Science. In 1997, he was honored by the Iowa Board of Regents for faculty excellence.
Anderson retired from UNI in May 2000.
Scope and Content
Professor Anderson's papers consist of curricular material relating to the teaching of geology; information collected in the writing of his article "Iowa's Self-Made Paleontologists"; correspondence, programs, and other material associated with his work in the Paleontological Society of America; photographs and other material from the Tri-State Geological Field Conferences; and his publications.
The material relating to Professor Anderson's article on "Iowa's Self-Made Paleontologists" includes survey forms and correspondence from and about several notable Iowa paleontologists including B. H. Beane, Carl Campbell, and Harrell Strimple.
Professor Anderson donated these papers to the University Archives in May and June, 2000.
