We celebrate Banned Books Week each year to bring attention to books that have been challenged, restricted, or banned, and to highlight the importance of even the most controversial texts. Many of the books you'll see featured this week haven't actually been banned. They've been challenged or otherwise targeted for removal, but they've remained on shelves in the long run after communities followed their own challenge policies and allowed for advocacy and discussion. This week, we encourage you to look at the books that challenge you the most, not just the books whose challenges seem specious or silly. You can get more information at bannedbooksweek.org.
The Rod Library will be celebrating the freedom to Read all week with displays in the main lobby and in our Youth department. A READ-OUT will be held outside of the library main doors on Thursday Oct. 1st from 10am - 11am and again from 12pm - 1pm. Come read and/or listen to a passage from a challenged book.
