Iowa Meets China

Xiaoting Wang's visit is sponsored by UNI's Center for Multicultural Education, Office of International Programs, and Rod Library, which is privileged to exhibit his artwork during the visit. More about the artist.

Mr. Wang has participated in CME's First Friday event on April 7 that celebrated Asian and Pacific Islander month. Wang performed multiple demonstrations and workshops on the art of Chinese calligraphy. Students participated and created traditional art on rice paper using authentic art brushes and paint from China. Simultaneously, the Middle East Dance Club performed and invited students to dance to music provide by KULT.

On April 11 more than 50 high school students from Des Moines and Cedar Falls met inside Rod Library for a workshop from Xiaoting Wang. The students were able to create Chinese paintings on rice paper under the direction of the artist. As a gift, the students were allowed to take home not only the artwork but the actual Chinese paint brushes.

World Religions Professor J. Soneson offered a lecture entitled, Daoism in Chinese Painting: A Conversation with a Chinese Painter on April 18. Soneson presented a brief introduction to the Chinese religion of Daoism and then turned the lecture over to Dr. Penny Wang who translated for the artist. The presentation was phenomenally thought-provoking. The presentation included slides, live demonstrations of Chinese painting styles, framed abstract art, Chinese symbols written on the chalkboard, and time was allotted for questions.
