Digging Up History: Exploring the History of UNI's Mastodon Tusk

Monday, November 13, 2017 - 3:18pm -   It’s the 1930’s in Hampton, Iowa. You’re shoveling in a gravel pit, and you suddenly strike something hard. You’ve unintentionally discovered a 12 foot long, 600 pound Mastodon tusk! How Did it Get to UNI? When the Hampton Mastodon tusk was found, it became a source of town pride. The citizens paraded it around town, and it was kept in the schoolhouse for the children to learn about. The tusk was acquired by the University of Northern Iowa in 1933 under the direction of Doctor Emmett J. Cable, who conducted extensive research on it. However, that’s just what happened here at Rod Library when Annette Lynch’s Dress and Human Behavior class hosted Un[dress] the Stigma, an empowerment fashion show. Wednesday, November 1, 2017 - 11:39am - Over 17,000 videos, including theatrical and independent releases, documentaries, international films, television shows, and training films, are now available through Kanopy, an on-demand web-based digital video delivery service licensed by Rod Library.   Producers whose films are available in the collection, include the BBC, Criterion Collection, Green Planet Films, Kino Lorber, New Day Films, and PBS. Titles are arranged in browsable subject (Environmental Sciences, Indigenous Studies, Mental Health) and thematic collections (LGBTQ Cinema, Leadership Training, Teacher Education Development), and include non-English titles.
