While students were taking their summer breaks, Rod Library was hard at work creating improvements to make your experience here even better! From rearranging our spaces to adding new technology, you’ll be even more excited to start the school year when you hear about what we’ve been up to this summer. Read on to find out about all of our new updates.
New this semester, students have the ability to checkout a Dell laptop for long-term use outside of the library. Using a student ID or finger scan, students can check out laptops from the Service Desk for up to a week to use in class, at home, or wherever you feel like working! The laptops come with chargers as well as a laptop bag for transport. Faculty and staff can also check out laptops for three hours at a time beginning this semester.
Rod Library has also added two new Dell Interactive Touch Screen Monitors that are available for student use. They are located on the 2nd and 3rd floors and are mounted on carts, so students can easily move them to serve individual or group study needs.
If you have visited Rod Library’s website since returning to campus, you probably noticed that it has been completely revamped! Last semester, the Digital Studies Practicum students worked with Rod Library to redesign the website. Along with making our website more user-friendly, we have also added some helpful features. The homepage now has separate search options for OneSearch!, the library website, and Google scholar to make finding the information you need even simpler. Additionally, by clicking on the “technology” icon on the homepage, you can now access a map showing open computers in the library as well as a list of items for checkout that includes photos and information about length of checkouts. Take a few minutes to look around on the new website. You may just find some helpful tools you didn’t know about!
The Learning Center @ Rod Library
Thanks to a partnership with the Office of Undergraduate Studies, Rod Library is proud to bring you The Learning Center @ Rod Library. Students will now be able to meet with writing coaches, math and science tutors, academic coaches, and peer mentors as well as attend supportive seminars, supplemental instruction sessions, and special workshops all in the Learning Commons. For more information on services offered by The Learning Center @ Rod Library or to schedule an appointment, visit their web page.
Changes in our Spaces
Since The Learning Center @ Rod Library has moved into the Learning Commons, our librarians have relocated to the 3rd floor. If you are looking for someone to help you with research specific to your area of study, visit the liaison librarians & collection strategists web page to find your liaison librarian and their new office location. You can also continue to stop by the Library Services Desk for assistance as well. Our librarians are so excited to assist you in their new location!
Finally, you may have noticed the furniture in the Learning Commons has expanded. We strive to create learning environments that will help all types of students, and we hope that our new arrangements will allow students additional access to technology and spaces for group work. Additionally, we have also added a family study room on the north wall of the Learning Commons. This space is intended as a place for student parents/caregivers to study while offering their children an enclosed area near them to play. It includes two workstations and some kid-friendly amenities.
Hope you all have a great year!
