Support at Rod Library During COVID-19

UPDATE (April 6, 2020): Curbside Pick-up and all physical mailings, including Interlibrary Loan materials, are no longer available in compliance with Governor Reynold's proclamation of April 6, 2020, to further reduce contact with the public. While the building remains closed until further notice, we are still Open Online for chat, email, Zoom, a librarian, digitization requests, and online resources. Keep in touch with us on social media as well.

Library Support 

We encourage all students, faculty, staff, and the UNI community to follow the guidelines on the University of Northern Iowa's COVID-19 website and to take the precaution of frequent hand washing. We have received several requests for accessing library materials and library services remotely (i.e., from outside the library building or off-campus), especially in light of concerns about COVID-19 and its impact on campus operations. Rod Library's most up-to-date information about resources and services is on the Remote Resources for Library Users research guide. Information includes:

  • Library collections online (ebooks, journals, and databases)
  • Online research support (Zoom consultations, Research Guides, virtual chat)
  • Renewing/returning materials from off-campus​

​​Many remote services already exist for accessing and using collections at the Rod Library. UNI IT has also created a helpful page for getting access remotely. ​


Library Collections Online

Ebooks: Rod Library students, faculty, and staff can access ebooks remotely with their CatID login. You can search for ebooks using OneSearch!
Journals Search: You can search for journals by title
Databases: Access to hundreds of databases browse our A-Z databases list.
Digitization Requests: Articles or book chapters that are only available in print, including those on physical course reserve, we can digitize material within copyright guidelines and provide them electronically to you.


Online Research Support: Virtual Chat and Research Guides

Research virtual chat (Live Chat) is available for reduced hours (9 a.m. -7 p.m. weekdays and noon to 4 p.m. weekends) to all members of the UNI community to help with searching for and navigating library resources. You can access a research chat on the library homepage under "Ask Us! For Research Help," This service is staffed by Rod Library's student assistants, staff, and Librarians.
LibGuides (aka "Library Research Guides") provides an introduction to getting started in research. Rod Library offers guides to provide students with a resource where they can search by subject to find information to support their research. 


Research Consultations Using Zoom

For more in-depth research support, students can make an appointment with a librarian via Zoom. You can do this by visiting the Ask Us! For Research Help page. In three easy steps, you can have your Zoom meeting scheduled. 

  1. Select a librarian
  2. Select a date 
  3. Select a time 

Zoom is the preferred consultation method. However, you can also meet via email, chat, or over the phone. 


Renewing/Returning Library Materials from Off-Campus

Rod Library has extended due dates to August 28, 2020. Please hold on to Rod Library and InterLibrary Loan materials. As the situations continue to change, watch for updates.
