Wiki Edit-a-Thon: Art & Feminism

Posted 04/20/2020

What are Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon events?

Wikipedia-Edit-A-Thons are editing events Rod Library hosts for students to add, change, elaborate, review, and cite information on Wikipedia's Online Encyclopedia. Wikipedia events focus on topics including Art, Feminism, LGBTQ+ Community, People of Color, and other underrepresented people and issues.

Art & Feminism

April 21, 11 a.m - 2 p.m. Central Time (US & Canada), Via Zoom: Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon. In partnership with Elizabeth Sutton's "Arts of Africa" class. The event is a worldwide edit-a-thon to add content to Wikipedia about female artists. Siân Evans, Jacqueline Mabey, Michael Mandiberg, and Laurel Ptak founded this project. The event is said to be "a massive multinational effort to correct a persistent bias in Wikipedia, which is disproportionately written by and about men."

The motivation for creating such an event include responding to negative media coverage about Wikipedia's cataloging system, continuing to fill content gaps and to increase the number of female contributors. On Wikipedia, 17% of biographies on Wikipedia are about women, and female editors do only 15% of the content, leaving a disparity in the numbers.

Why we do this

Rod Library strives to provide opportunities to learn about underrepresented areas of society and options for action to decrease the gap of bias. Wikipedia Edit-a-Thons are one way of incorporating learning, experience, and students to make a change in the world beyond the classroom.
