Catherine is the Rod Library’s Student of the Month for March 2021. She is a senior Music major from Waukee, Iowa, and will be graduating this coming May. In addition to being involved in the UNI bass studio, which includes ensemble work and performing for recitals, Catherine is a member of the UNI Symphony Orchestra. She notes that COVID protocols have posed a real challenge to symphony members. Catherine says that distancing requirements and plastic shielding in certain sections have made hearing fellow performers difficult, but symphony members have taken on the challenge and have continued to present exceptional performances.
Catherine has been working in the Fine & Performing Arts Collection (FPAC) for two years. Her duties include providing basic reference services online and in person, assisting patrons using listening rooms, shelving and stack maintenance, compiling statistics, and general patron service. Another aspect of Catherine’s work is the development of visual displays within the FPAC area. She highlights the opportunity to create displays as one of her favorite things about working in FPAC, and says the process usually begins with identifying an important musical event associated with the current month and building on that theme. Her display topics have included Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, Fiddler on the Roof, and The Day the Music Died, among several others.
Catherine says she sought work in the Rod Library because she has had an association with libraries for most of her life. Her mother worked at the West Des Moines Public Library, and she would often find herself at the library with her mother while growing up. Eventually Catherine became a volunteer there, which included helping at library programs and events.
Catherine says she really enjoys working in the Rod Library. She says the position she’s found in Rod Library’s FPAC meshes well with her musical and creative interests. In addition, she likes what she calls “the productive atmosphere” and views both the staff and patrons alike as being motivated to get things done. Catherine says she also likes the role she plays in providing access to all that the Rod Library has to offer.
As you may imagine, Catherine spends much of her time practicing her double bass, so free time is limited. In fact, she is currently working very hard on her upcoming senior recital, scheduled for March 29. The program is varied and includes works by Antonio Capuzzi, Aulis Sallinen, and The Beatles. On top of that, Catherine is also involved in a campus dance group, The MOVEment.
Congratulations on your upcoming graduation, Catherine. We will miss your presence in the library but are happy to see you reach this important milestone. Thanks for being such a great asset to the Rod Library, and congratulations for being chosen March 2021 Rod Library Student of the Month.
