UNI ScholarWorks

What We Do

The Digital Scholarship Unit coordinates UNI ScholarWorks, the institutional repository. UNI ScholarWorks collects and showcases the innovative research, scholarship, and creative work produced by the University of Northern Iowa community. Its purpose is to foster discovery and collaboration as well as demonstrate the impact of teaching and learning in Iowa and beyond.

In addition, Digital Scholarship has partnered with Special Collections & University Archives to disseminate significant UNI publications through the repository.

With UNI ScholarWorks, you can:

  • Share your work through our digital publishing platform
  • Preserve your scholarship and data
  • Find campus experts and potential collaborators

Collections

We collect a wide variety of materials from the UNI community. Listed below are a few of our larger ongoing collections, with criteria for material submission. If you have questions about materials you would like to deposit in UNI ScholarWorks, contact us at scholarworks@uni.edu.

Theses, Dissertations, and Non-Culminating Projects

UNI ScholarWorks is the main ongoing repository for theses, dissertations, and other non-culminating student projects. Collections include the following:

Digital Scholarship staff work directly with the Grad College to collect student works and permissions. If you have questions about the process for depositing your project in UNI ScholarWorks, please contact scholarworks@uni.edu.

Faculty Work

UNI ScholarWorks contains a variety of faculty work. Collections include the following:

Faculty and staff can submit information about their publications directly to UNI ScholarWorks through a "Submit Research" link in the Faculty Publications collection. Digital Scholarship staff will process your work and follow up with any potential questions.

Data Services

Often grant funders or journal publishers have requirements about depositing data sets in an open repository. UNI faculty and students have the option to archive and preserve their data sets using UNI ScholarWorks’ Data Sets collection.

Interested UNI faculty, staff, and students contact scholarworks@uni.edu and complete the Data Sets Collection Form.

Journals

UNI ScholarWorks provides a publishing platform that allows UNI to manage scholarly publications in an electronic and Open Access environment. The system offers the opportunity to manage the entire process online, including:

  • Acceptance and publishing of final version
  • Editing and version control
  • Blind or double blind peer review process
  • Manuscript Submissions

New and existing journals may be published through UNI ScholarWorks. Types of journals that may be included in UNI ScholarWorks:

  • Scholarly journals published by UNI
  • Scholarly journals with UNI editors
  • Literary journals published by UNI
  • Society publications with UNI editors

The intention is to provide open access for all journals that are published in the UNI ScholarWorks. Priority support will be given for journals that are open access immediately upon publication and follow peer-review procedures.

Additional Information:

  • Journals should be considered ongoing in nature. If no new content or issues have been produced for two consecutive years, the journal will be considered to have “ceased publication.”

  • Peer-reviewed journals should have an editorial board. An editorial board should be designated to serve as the body overseeing the editorial policies, and to manage the peer review procedures. If the editorial board is composed of students, at least one faculty member must be on the editorial board to help ensure continuity. The editorial board members will be listed on the journal information page.

  • All authors of individual articles retain their copyright to the works submitted; however, all submissions become a permanent part of the UNI Institutional Repository.

  • All new journal requests will be reviewed by the Digital Services Coordinator. In order to allow sufficient time, please submit requests at least two months prior to requesting the start of a journal.
