Open Access Publishing
Support at UNI
What is Open Access (OA)? OA publications are digital, online, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions.
UNI supports and encourages researchers/authors to share their work through OA publishing venues because OA expands our reach and global impact, as well as leveling the playing field in terms of information access. Additionally, the Iowa Board of Regents and UNI Faculty Senate both encouraged OA publishing (see related UNI Faculty Senate resolution, 2014 and Board of Regents motion, 2002). Some funders may require Open Access publishing for projects they fund.
Funding for OA Publishing
UNI currently has two options to help researchers with Article Processing Charges (APCs), the fees some publishers charge to make your work available open access.
Since many research grants require that the results be published open access, these fees are often unavoidable. If you’re planning to apply for a grant, first talk to the Research and Sponsored Programs Office about building these APCs into your grant proposal.
Oxford University Press Journals
Rod Library has a Read-and-Publish Agreement with Oxford University Press Journals which waives the APCs for all UNI faculty. If your research is suitable for publication in one of their wide range of titles, which cover all subject areas, it’s a simple process to confirm your identity as a UNI-connected researcher and have the APC waived. OUP will send you a form to fill out once your paper has been accepted, which will be forwarded to Rod Library for confirmation of your UNI status. Contact Janet Brennan Croft at janet.croft@uni.edu if you have any questions.
Support for Probationary Faculty
If you are probationary (pre-tenure) faculty, we also have a new APC support program run by the Provost’s Office in coordination with Rod Library’s Scholarly Communication Committee. You can apply to have part of your APC fees covered by UNI, subject to funding availability. Please fill out the Open Access Publishing Support Request form once your paper has been accepted. Contact library@uni.edu if you have any questions.
Please note: The OA Publishing Support Request form currently states the form should be submitted "three weeks prior to submission." The form can be submitted once the paper has been accepted.
