2023-2028 Mission, Goals, & Strategies

The Rod Library Information Literacy Program is informed by its mission statement and is actively working toward accomplishing goals to support the library’s strategic plan

Mission Statement: In an increasingly complex information environment, Rod Library’s Information Literacy Program empowers a diverse community of learners with the knowledge, skills, and habits of mind to be curious lifelong learners who critically and actively use, transform, and create information.

Goal 1: Collaborate with colleagues.

Collaborate with colleagues and external stakeholders to integrate information literacy objectives into university curriculum using best practices.

Strategy 1: Library instructors will prioritize use of active learning methods in the classroom.

Strategy 2: Library instructors will identify the scope and depth of information literacy needs in at least two of their disciplinary areas and/or a non-departmental program.

Strategy 3: Library instructors will work with teaching faculty and the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, when appropriate, to help them create well-written, research-based assignments.

Goal 2: Expand asynchronous instruction.

Expand use of asynchronous, self-paced information literacy instruction ideally with opportunities for practice and assessment.

Strategy 1: Library instructors will identify focused content areas for self-instruction.

Strategy 2: Library instructors - often in collaboration with the Online Experience Coordination team - will create content for self-paced instruction using the appropriate tool(s)/method(s).

Strategy 3: Library instructors will enhance the utility of asynchronous tools with user feedback.

Goal 3: Develop credit-based instruction.

Develop and deploy credit-based instruction in information literacy for UNI students.

Strategy 1: Library instructors will develop and teach a 3-credit class in the Critical Thinking and Information Literacy Certificate within UNIFI in fall 2023.

Strategy 2: Library instructors will develop a proposal(s) for 1-credit information literacy course(s) to be taught by Fall 2025. 

Strategy 3: Library instructors who develop or teach credit-bearing classes will share their syllabi and assignments with colleagues annually.

Goal 4: Assess local practice.

Assess local information literacy practice to improve existing initiatives and create opportunities for new ones.

Strategy 1: Library instructors will develop a peer-observation program for library instruction.

Strategy 2: Library instructors will develop methods for measuring information literacy program performance.

Strategy 3: Library instructors will develop methods for evaluating student information literacy outcomes.
